Requesting an AI reindex means signaling to crawlers that content has changed and should be re-fetched. AI engines mostly do not provide direct “reindex this URL” tools the way Google Search Console does. The signaling has to happen through the same web standards that engines themselves use to discover and prioritize content.

Why this matters

Without active signaling, content updates take days or weeks to propagate through AI engine indexes. For:

  • Time-sensitive content (news, prices, product availability), the delay matters.
  • Major site restructures, the delay can mean ranking and visibility regressions.
  • Critical corrections (factual errors that AI engines may already be citing), the delay is a real risk.

The signals below shorten the lag from the engine’s natural recrawl cycle to something closer to hours, especially for search crawlers.

Signals that AI engines pick up

Sitemap with timestamps

The XML sitemap’s field tells crawlers when each URL last meaningfully changed. Crawlers prioritize URLs with recent values.

Two things matter:

  • The timestamp must be accurate. Crawlers detect and downweight sitemaps where lies (every URL gets a fresh timestamp regardless of actual changes).
  • The sitemap itself must be re-fetched by the crawler. Crawlers re-fetch sitemaps regularly but not constantly. A on the sitemap entry in robots.txt or a sitemap-index file with its own helps.

IndexNow

IndexNow is an open protocol for proactively notifying search engines of URL changes. The site sends a single HTTP request listing the changed URLs; participating engines pick it up.

Bing and Yandex support IndexNow directly. Many other engines that ground in Bing benefit indirectly: a page newly updated in Bing’s index is available to ChatGPT search, Copilot, and others.

Set up takes one HTTP request and one verification key file at the domain root.

llms.txt updates

When llms.txt changes, AI engines that consume it pick up the new structure and content list. Updating llms.txt on every meaningful site change is good practice.

Search consoles

For engines that ground in Google or Bing:

  • Google Search Console has a URL Inspection tool with a “Request Indexing” action. Limited daily quota but effective for high-priority URLs.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools has a URL Submission API and a manual submission UI.

These submit to Google’s and Bing’s indexes, which then propagate to AI engines in ai-engines that ground in them.

What does not work

  • Manually emailing operators. No process exists for this with most AI engines.
  • Adding a “last updated” stamp visible only to crawlers. Engines detect and downweight cloaking patterns.
  • Spam-pinging URLs repeatedly. IndexNow and similar protocols rate-limit and downweight abuse.
  • Pings to deprecated services. Google deprecated its sitemap ping endpoint. Some sites still call it; the calls do nothing.

Operational pattern

For a site with active content publishing:

  1. Generate sitemap.xml dynamically with accurate per URL.
  2. Set up IndexNow with a key file at the domain root.
  3. On every content publish or significant update:

– Sitemap regenerates with the new .

– IndexNow ping fires for the changed URLs.

– llms.txt updates if the change is structural.

  1. For high-priority pages, additionally submit via Google Search Console’s URL Inspection.

The first three are automated. The fourth is manual for the small set of pages where speed of reindexing has business value.

How long it takes

Best case timing after the right signals fire:

  • Bing index update: hours to a day, after IndexNow.
  • Google index update: hours to days, after Search Console submission.
  • Engines grounding in those indexes (ChatGPT search, Copilot, Gemini grounding): a day to several days after the underlying index updates.
  • Engines with their own crawlers (Perplexity, Claude with web search): variable; their crawl schedules differ.

A realistic expectation: most engines reflect content updates within 2–7 days when signals are sent properly. Without signals, 1–4 weeks is normal.

Implementation example

AwesomeShoes Co. corrects sizing guidance and return-policy details after support escalations, but stale AI answers keep showing old information. The content operations lead needs faster update propagation across grounded answer systems.

Implementation discussion: the engineering team regenerates sitemap values on publish, triggers IndexNow for changed URLs, updates llms.txt when structure shifts, and submits highest-risk pages through Google and Bing tools. The analyst tracks when corrected passages begin appearing in answer citations to validate that reindex signals reached the engines.
