Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting a website’s content surfaced as a source inside AI-generated answers. Where traditional SEO competes for ranked links on a search results page, AEO competes for inclusion in the answer itself — the paragraph an AI assistant returns when a user asks a question.
What an answer engine is
An answer engine is any system that responds to a user query with a synthesized answer rather than a list of links. ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Bing Copilot all qualify. They each retrieve, weigh, and cite source material differently, but the surface they produce — a single answer with sources attached — is consistent across them.
Why AEO is distinct from SEO
SEO and AEO share technical foundations. Both depend on crawlable content, structured data, internal linking, and authority signals. They diverge on what counts as a win:

- An AEO win is a citation inside an answer, or the answer itself being assembled from a page’s content.
A page can rank well in classic search and still be invisible to answer engines. The reverse is also true.

They then monitor citation frequency and answer inclusion by query cluster to confirm whether the updates improve source selection quality.
