One of our clients asked for the price of an AI brand mention and this was tricky for us to explain

A client sent us a straightforward question: what does it cost to get our brand mentioned in ChatGPT? We understood why they asked. AI brand mentions had started driving real referral traffic for companies in their category, and they wanted a budget line. The honest answer had two parts — and the first part was something most people do not expect to hear.

There is no price for an AI brand mention

AI companies — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Perplexity — do not sell brand mentions. There is no ad slot, no sponsored position, no bidding system that places your brand inside a ChatGPT or Claude answer. The FTC would consider undisclosed paid placements in AI responses to be deceptive advertising, and no major AI provider offers it. Anyone selling “guaranteed AI mentions” is selling something that does not exist.

What AI engines do is retrieve. They pull from the content they have already indexed, learned from, and assigned authority to. The mention happens — or does not — based on whether your brand has built the right signals in the places those engines look. That is a different kind of investment. It is not a media buy. It is a market presence problem.

The cost depends on where you currently stand

No two brands start from the same position. The cost of improving your AI visibility is a function of several variables, and we cannot quote a number until we understand them.

How many credible sources already mention your brand. AI engines weigh citations from high-authority publications, industry directories, and recognized databases. If your brand has zero presence in those sources, you are building from nothing and the starting cost is higher. If you already have 20 strong citations, the marginal cost of the next ten is lower.

How many competitors are ahead of you in AI answers. If three competitors are consistently cited in AI responses to your target queries, each of those citations represents a retrieval signal you have to match or exceed. More competitors entrenched in the answers means more signals to overcome.

How competitive the niche is. A brand in enterprise cybersecurity is competing against companies that have been publishing white papers, earning press coverage, and building citation authority for a decade. A brand in a newer category may face fewer entrenched competitors. The niche determines how much work the market has already done on behalf of your competition.

How much your competitors are spending on credible source placement. PR campaigns, thought leadership articles, analyst reports, and forum authority are investments that build the citation signals AI engines retrieve. If the category leader is spending $10,000 a month on that, a $500 effort will not move the needle on queries they already own.

What the investment looks like in practice

The starting point is a brand visibility audit. Before any campaign spend makes sense, you need to know how your brand currently appears — or does not appear — in AI answers: which queries you are being cited for, which competitors are ahead of you on the queries that matter, and what signal gaps are causing the retrieval failures. That audit costs between $200 and $1,000 depending on the depth of analysis and the number of queries scoped.

Once you know where you stand, the active campaign work begins. This means PR publications in sources AI engines treat as credible, coordinated social media and forum presence that builds your brand’s footprint in the fresh content those engines index, and content that directly answers the queries you want to rank for — written to the structural standards that AI engines retrieve. Starting budget for that work is $2,000 a month.

The timeline depends on the gap between your current position and the brands already being cited. Most clients begin seeing their brand surface in AI answers within three to six months of consistent campaign work — not because the AI has been instructed to mention them, but because the retrieval signals they have built now match what the engine is looking for.
