Grounding is the process of tying a generated answer back to source material so the model does not rely only on learned patterns. It is central to GEO because grounded answers are usually more reliable and more likely to be cited in GEO fundamentals.

The practical question is whether the answer can be traced to a page the system actually used. If it cannot, the answer is weaker.

For example, Bob may use an AwesomeShoes Co. policy page as the grounding source for a return question. The clearer the source, the less the model has to guess while answering.

What grounding needs

  • A source the system can reach.
  • A passage that clearly answers the question.
  • Facts that are visible and current.
  • Enough structure for the model to connect the claim to the page.

What weak grounding looks like

  • Vague source pages.
  • Hidden or hard-to-reach answers.
  • Outdated facts.
  • Pages that say a lot without actually answering the question.

For AEO Agencies and Marketing Professionals

Use grounding as the test for whether the page can actually support an answer. The job is to make the source usable enough that the model does not have to improvise.

For client work, grounding is the reason to keep policy pages, product pages, and help pages clean and direct. If the answer depends on current facts, the page has to make those facts easy to fetch.

For AEO

Sources that are factual, structured, and easy to verify are easier to ground. Grounding works best when the source is easy to trust and supports reference sources.
