Answer share is the amount of an answer surface that comes from one source compared with the other sources used in the response. It is a way to describe how much of the visible answer is carried by one page or publisher in AI answer.

This is not just about being cited. A source can be cited lightly, or it can supply the core wording, facts, and supporting detail that the answer depends on. Higher answer share usually means the source is doing more of that work.

Why it matters

Higher answer share can mean more visibility, more brand exposure, and more chances for the answer to reflect your phrasing and facts.

It also helps with diagnosis. If one page gets cited but barely contributes to the answer, that is different from a page that shapes the main response. Those two outcomes should not be treated the same.

What shapes it

  • Topic fit.
  • Source clarity.
  • Specificity of the page.
  • How much of the answer the source can support.
  • Whether the content is easy to quote without distortion.

For example, if Mukesh publishes a detailed comparison page for AwesomeShoes Co. and the assistant lifts most of the product facts from that page, the answer share is likely higher than if the page only contributes one small mention.

AEO rule of thumb

Pages with focused, high-signal content are more likely to win a larger share of the final answer and better answer position.
