Using AI for AEO

AI tools are useful inside the AEO workflow itself — for research, drafting, auditing, and analysis — but only when the operator understands what AI is good and bad at. The pattern is: AI handles volume and pattern recognition, humans handle judgment and editorial standards.

Where AI helps in the AEO workflow

Audit and analysis

  • Running prompt sets at scale. Automating the queries against engines and parsing the responses for citations and sentiment.
  • Reading the cited content. Summarizing what makes a competitor’s cited page win.
  • Clustering queries by intent or topic. Useful when the prompt set is large.
  • Sentiment classification. Faster than manual coding, accurate enough at the aggregate level.

Content production

  • Briefing. Generating tight content briefs from a topic and a query — the question, the answer, the structure, the evidence to gather.
  • Drafting from a brief. Producing a first draft that follows a specified structure.
  • Restructuring existing content. Rewriting blog-era pages into AI-first structure.
  • Generating supporting passages within a human-written page (definitions, examples, comparisons) aligned with AI-first content.

Schema and metadata

  • Generating valid schema markup from page content.
  • Writing meta descriptions and titles at scale, with editorial review.
  • Suggesting internal links based on topical relationships.

Monitoring

  • Detecting visibility regressions by comparing audit runs.
  • Diagnosing why a page lost a citation by comparing the cited replacement.
  • Surfacing content gaps between the prompt set and the existing site content.

Where AI fails in the AEO workflow

  • Writing first paragraphs. The first paragraph is the highest-leverage sentence on the page. AI tends to produce vague, generic openings. Edit carefully or write by hand.
  • Making editorial judgments about what to cover, what to skip, and what’s interesting. The model has no view on the brand or category beyond what’s in its training data.
  • Verifying claims. AI tools hallucinate confidently. Every factual claim in AI-drafted content needs human verification.
  • Producing original analysis. The model can summarize what’s already public. It cannot generate first-hand insight.
  • Reading nuance in sentiment or framing. Aggregate sentiment classification is fine; per-response nuance often needs a human.

Practical patterns that work

The brief-first pattern

Don’t ask AI to “write an article about X.” Write a brief that specifies:

  • The exact question the page answers.
  • The answer in one sentence.
  • The structure: H2s, what each section covers.
  • The required evidence: stats, examples, sources.
  • Tone and constraints (American English, no italics, no marketing voice).

A brief like this produces drafts that are 80% usable. A loose prompt produces drafts that are 20% usable.

The audit assistant pattern

Use AI to process audit data, not to generate it:

  • Have the model read raw audit responses and code each one for citation/sentiment.
  • Have it cluster queries by where the brand wins or loses.
  • Have it summarize the cited competitor passages and identify the patterns.

The gap-finder pattern

Feed the existing site content and the prompt set to a model and ask: “Which queries in this set does this content not answer?” Output is a list of content gaps to prioritize.

What to avoid

  • Publishing AI drafts unedited. Even good drafts need claim-by-claim editing.

  • Trusting AI tooling claims about visibility. Some AEO tools claim to “predict” citations. They estimate. Treat the estimates as priors, not measurements.
